School of Public Policy and Administration

PhD in Public Policy and Administration

Are you ready to engage in a multidisciplinary approach to develop the range of competencies you will need to undertake sophisticated research in public policy and public administration? The SPPA´s PhD is designed to help you master subjects in multiple academic disciplines, including politics, economics and quantitative and/or qualitative methods in policy research. Built upon the diversity and strengths of academic departments and faculty within the School and the University community, you will receive an exceptional education across these disciplines.

In addition to developing broad analytical skills in multiple subjects, students take courses designed to prepare them to undertake research in specific areas of public policy and administration. Through course work in each specialized field, students develop expertise for a variety of careers in the public and private sectors.

The Ph.D. program is designed to provide knowledge of the principles of organizational behavior and administrative decision making in public and quasi-public organizations; an understanding of the public policy process, including the interrelationships of economic, political and social factors that facilitate and constrain change; an ability to apply research and analytical methods to the analysis of policy and administrative problems; and an in-depth understanding of policy issues and analytical approaches in a functional public affairs area.

Most doctoral students already have a graduate degree and significant experience in a policy-related environment. Many students are mid-career professionals. The PhD Program may be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis.

Graduates of the doctoral program pursue careers in teaching and research related to public policy and administration and as policy researchers and analysts in government and the private sector. Some hold administrative positions in these sectors and many are closely involved in the development and evaluation of public policies.
